Mulberry in French

Why is there a difference between a Continental and a French purse? Isn't France on the continent? And why might the French want to distance themselves from the rest of the continent?

Anyway, after having been in my Prada Continental Purse for years, I really wanted to go to something more compact, especially since I am now usually carrying around my Filofax as well.
